South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Tours Oregon ICE Facility Alongside Right-Wing Figures

Kristi Noem, acting as the head of the Department of Homeland Security, visited the federal immigration enforcement location in Portland, Oregon on a recent weekday. During her visit, she observed a limited demonstration outside, which contrasts sharply to the dramatic "blockade" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Joined by MAGA Personalities

Governor Noem was escorted by a set of conservative influencers who were whisked from the local airport to the site in her motorcade. Her department has recently produced more aggressive social media content featuring federal personnel carrying out immigration raids and deploying crowd control measures at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Portland police established a perimeter outside the building in the Portland's waterfront district before the governor's arrival. A handful protesters, including one in the outfit of a fowl and another as a shark, were maintained behind barriers.

A song blared from a gathering spot close by, with words about Donald Trump and allegations. One protester called out to a federal recorder documenting from the facility's roof, challenging whether the Department of Homeland Security had been renamed the "ministry of propaganda".

Reporting Details

Reporters from mainstream media organizations were also kept at the police line outside, while the partisan influencers in Noem’s entourage—Benny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Media—broadcast digital content of the secretary leading federal agents in religious observance inside, delivering a motivational speech, and advising a member of the Oregon National Guard to "Prepare".

Recent Rulings

Governor Noem has previously echoed the Trump's allegations that the group of demonstrators—who have rallied in their dozens outside the office since the summer, including one in an inflatable frog costume—are "terrorists" who have placed the office "besieged", making the deployment of DHS agents critical.

But, on last weekend, a federal judge in Oregon blocked Trump’s effort to nationalize the state's guard, ruling that the Trump's assertions that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "without evidence".

A day later, the judge, Judge Immergut—who was selected to the bench by Trump—broadened the ruling to prevent state militia from other states from being sent in the city. She acted after he reacted to her first order by attempting to send members of the another state's militia to Oregon.

Escalating Tensions

Following Donald Trump drew attention the limited yet ongoing protest outside the ICE facility and made false claims that Portland is "in a state of war", a growing number of his adherents, including MAGA influencers, have arrived to confront the individuals.

Some of these encounters have led to scuffles and physical fights, leading to arrests by the Portland police. Nick Sortor was taken into custody after he tried to force his way a demonstration site on a pavement near the site and was involved in a scuffle over an U.S. flag. Sortor had earlier taken the flag from a individual who was burning it.

Legal accusations against the influencer were later dropped after an outcry in partisan press led the head of the legal unit of the Justice Department, the division head, to threaten an investigation of the local police over claimed political bias.

Two individuals the influencer was involved in an altercation with still face charges.

Government Statements

Over the weekend, Governor Tina Kotek, Tina Kotek, accused government personnel in the ICE facility of trying to irritate the demonstrators by using disproportionate amounts of chemical irritants in a local community and bringing in partisan figures to film the gathering from the top of the site. "They are deliberately inciting," she commented.

Three of those conservative influencers were mentioned in a official record last month as "counter-protesters" who "repeatedly come back and harass the protesters until they are assaulted or pepper sprayed" and decline "frequent warnings from law enforcement to keep clear of" the protesters.

Influencer Activities

A conservative personality, a ex-reporter who changed careers as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from BuzzFeed for content theft, posted footage of Governor Noem observing from the top of the ICE facility at the small group of protesters below, including Jack Dickinson who dons a bird outfit to taunt the former president. The influencer described the clip of the secretary viewing the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

In spite of the disconnect between the claims from the former president and the secretary that this facility is "besieged" from "radicals" and clear visual evidence of a limited group of demonstrators in harmless costumes, the figures with the secretary continued to refer to the protesters as dangerous radicals.

Meeting with Police Chief

While in Portland, the secretary also met with the Portland police chief, Bob Day, who has been portrayed as "liberal" in partisan press for permitting his law enforcement to detain the influencer. In a online post on the engagement, Johnson stated that the chief had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then left the facility past a handful of individuals on the exterior, including one dressed as a animal wearing a sombrero.
